Celebrating Life with the Little Warriors

Corporate Social Responsibility 2014 TYF, Inc. | BPO Company PhilippinesCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities usually create an opportunity for companies to give back to the community. In our case, it seemed like we took more from the experience as compared to the little kids with whom we laughed, danced, sang, and talked with that fine Saturday morning.

For this year, Taking You Forward, a Cebu call center, chose to partner with Kythe Foundation, Inc., a hospital based-organization whose goal is to provide the necessary support children with chronic illness need during their confinement. It was through them that we get to sponsor one of their monthly Celebrate Life Parties, a gathering meant to be a happy occasion for the children as it’s their time off from being patients.

Knowing that we are throwing a party for children with chronic illness, each of us has our own apprehensions as we don’t know what to expect. Are we going to cry when we see them? What will they look like? Would they like the activities that we have planned for them? These and other questions came to mind as the day drew near.

We had our answers when we went to Perpetual Succour Hospital last September 13, 2014.

Corporate Social Responsibility 2014 | Cebu Call Center CompanyThere, we get to meet Ms. Shalom Rea V. Bernales, a Child Life Officer for the VisMin area, who briefed us about the organization and most especially the kids. According to her, majority of the children have leukemia while there are some who are dealing with chronic illnesses like retinoblastoma and hemophilia. Ages 2-18, they have to undergo a four-year treatment with the first year requiring them to be at the hospital thrice a week.

As soon as we heard this, we tried to prepare ourselves mentally and emotionally. Although we are fully grown adults, knowing this still brings a pang in our hearts for most of us are either parents or older siblings to kids of the same age.

However, we were pleasantly surprised the minute that we started interacting with them. Instead of tears, they made us smile with their optimism and the fun-loving attitude common in children. You can see their eagerness to join the contests and their happiness every time they won something. If you haven’t met them, you probably can’t help but think of them as very sick children. During the party, all we saw were kids who love to play, draw, dance, sing, and were very appreciative of the offerings we had for them.

For hours, we played games, enjoyed snacks, played more games, and took a lot of pictures. Gifts and prizes were given. Stories of sacrifice and bravery were shared by the facilitators and parents.

All in all, it was a good day for the kids. Gatherings like these are indeed as therapeutic as any other drug as it, just like what the word “kythe” means, promotes healing through simple sharing and togetherness. We at TYF are both happy and grateful to be a part of it. Moments like these always remind us of the beauty of sharing even a fraction of your time and resources to others especially the ones who are going through something.
